The Goals for a Fairtrade Zone
For the Fairtrade Foundation to have awarded Fairtrade Zone Status to Bassetlaw, 5 goals had to be met.  They are:
  • The local council must pass a resolution supporting Fairtrade, and serve Fairtrade coffee and tea at its meetings and in offices and canteens.
  • Bassetlaw District Council have give Fairtrade for Bassetlaw tremendous support, for which we are very grateful.  As early as December 2008, they passed a resolution supporting Fairtrade.  The Council now use Fairtrade tea & coffee for their meetings.  In addition they have helped us produce our newsletters and our other promotional material.  After Bassetlaw was awarded Fairtrade Zone status, they hosted a Civic Reception in our honour.
  • A range of Fairtrade products must be readily available in the area’s shops and served in local cafés and catering establishments.
  • As can be seen from the Directory pages, there are many Fairtrade outlets in Bassetlaw and we are adding more all the time.
  • Fairtrade products must be used by a number of local work places educational establishments, faith communities and other community organisations.
  • Again, the Directory pages show that the commitment to Fairtrade can been seen in many different places in Bassetlaw.
  • Attract media coverage and organise events to gain popular support for the campaign.
  • From our Wine Tasting Evening, through Fairtrade Fortnight to having stalls at Manton Gala & other events over the Summer, we try to keep showing whygoing Fairtrade is important .  We have also had media coverage both in news articles in the local papers & interviews on local radio and also articles on Fairtrade in village & church magazines.
  • A local Fairtrade steering group must meet regularly to ensure continued commitment to Fairtrade Town status. The composition of your steering group should be representative of your community overall.
  • Our Steering Group meets regularly and has a membership that mixes both young and old and  Worksopians & Retfordians
Full details of what we needed to demonstrate are on the Fairtrade Foundation website at The 5 Goals
